The Washington Nationals are a Major League Baseball (MLB) team based in Washington D.C. The team was founded in 1969 as the Montreal Expos and moved to Washington D.C. in 2005. The team plays in the National League East division and has won four division titles (2012, 2014, 2016, and 2017) and one World Series championship (2019).
History
The Nationals’ franchise was founded in 1969 as the Montreal Expos. The team played in Montreal until 2004 when MLB announced that the team would relocate to Washington D.C. Prior to the move, the team had limited success, only making the playoffs once in 1981. However, the team had some notable players, including Tim Raines, Andre Dawson, and Vladimir Guerrero.
In 2005, the Washington Nationals played their first season in D.C. at RFK Stadium. The new team struggled in their first few years, finishing with losing records from 2005-2011. However, in 2012, the team won their first division title, led by young stars Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper. The Nationals would win three more division titles in 2014, 2016, and 2017, but were unable to make it past the National League Division Series in those years.
In 2019, the Nationals had a remarkable postseason run, winning the National League Wild Card game and then defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Division Series. They then swept the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Championship Series to advance to their first-ever World Series. In the World Series, they faced the heavily-favored Houston Astros but were able to win in seven games, with several players stepping up in key moments, including Stephen Strasburg, Anthony Rendon, and Juan Soto.

The Washington Nationals have had a storied history, from their beginnings in Montreal to their World Series championship in 2019. With a talented roster and strong coaching staff, the Nationals are poised for continued success in the future.
