The Washington Capitals are a professional ice hockey team based in Washington D.C. They are members of the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The team was established in 1974 as an expansion team and had a rocky start until the 1980s when they started to become a playoff contender. The team finally won their first Stanley Cup in 2018, ending a 44-year drought.

History of the Washington Capitals

The Washington Capitals’ first season in the NHL in 1974 was not very successful. They managed only 8 wins and 21 points, the least amount of points in a single season in NHL history at the time. The team’s early years were also marked by a revolving door of coaches and players which made it hard for them to establish a winning culture.

However, in the early 1980s, the team started to become a playoff contender. They made it to the playoffs for the first time in 1983 and reached the second round. They continued to make the playoffs for the rest of the decade and reached the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in 1998, but unfortunately, they were swept by the Detroit Red Wings.

Throughout the following decades, the Capitals had various playoff appearances but never made it past the second round until 2018. In the 2017-2018 season, they won their division and made it to the Stanley Cup Finals where they faced off against the Vegas Golden Knights. The Capitals triumphed in 5 games, securing their first ever Stanley Cup.

The Capitals Today

Today, the Capitals are led by star player Alex Ovechkin, who has won numerous awards including the Hart Trophy (NHL’s Most Valuable Player), the Maurice Richard Trophy (NHL’s Leading Goal Scorer), and the Ted Lindsay Award (NHL’s Most Outstanding Player) multiple times.

The Capitals have a strong and dedicated fan base who pack the Capital One Arena for home games. They have retired the numbers of several of their legendary players including Rod Langway, Mike Gartner, and Peter Bondra.
