Typhoons are given names by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) and the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) to identify and track them more easily. The names are usually selected from a list of predetermined names that represent people, animals, flowers, or other significant objects. Once a typhoon causes significant damage or loss of life, its name will be retired and replaced with another name.

Impact and Precautions

Typhoons can cause severe damage to structures, power systems, and transportation networks, making communication and travel difficult or impossible. Heavy rains can cause floods and landslides, while storm surges can flood coastal areas and cause widespread damage. Precautions that can be taken before and during a typhoon include:
