Thiago Emiliano da Silva, commonly known as Thiago Silva, is a Brazilian professional footballer who currently plays as a defender for Chelsea and the Brazilian national team.
Early Life and Career
Thiago was born on September 22, 1984, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He began his footballing journey with youth clubs in Rio de Janeiro, including the Fluminense Youth Academy. It was here where he developed his skills as a defender, and his impressive performances earned him his first professional contract with Fluminense FC in 2004.
Club Career
After several seasons with Fluminense, Thiago was signed by AC Milan in 2009, marking his move to a top European league. During his time at AC Milan, he quickly established himself as a world-class defender, playing a key role in the club’s Serie A success in the 2010-11 season. In 2012, he was named the Serie A Defender of the Year.
Thiago then moved to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in 2012, where he continued to excel as a defender. He helped lead the club to seven Ligue 1 titles, and was named the Ligue 1 Defender of the Year in each of his first four seasons with the club.
In August 2020, Thiago joined Chelsea on a free transfer, signing a one-year contract with the option to extend for a further year. Since his arrival at the club, he has established himself as a defensive stalwart, helping to tighten up Chelsea’s backline and leading the team to their UEFA Champions League victory in 2021.
International Career
Thiago made his international debut for Brazil in 2008, and has since earned over 90 caps for his country. He has played in several major international tournaments, including the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups, and the 2011 and 2015 Copa Americas. In 2013, he was named the captain of the Brazilian national team.
