Sloth bears are a fascinating species of bear found predominantly in the tropical regions of South Asia. Their scientific name is Melursus ursinus, and they are also known as the “labiated bear” due to their elongated lower lip. Habitat

Behavior

Conservation

Sloth bears are classified as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Their populations are in decline due to habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict. Sloth bears are also hunted for their gall bladders, which are used in traditional medicine.

The conservation efforts for sloth bears are largely focused on protecting their habitats and promoting conservation education among local communities. Conservationists are also trying to decrease the demand for bear products in the market by spreading awareness. The Indian government has declared sloth bears a protected species under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, which includes strict legal penalties for harming them.
