Shining: Overview, Synopsis, and Reviews
The Shining is a psychological horror film directed by Stanley Kubrick, released in 1980, and is widely considered a classic of the genre. It is based on Stephen King’s 1977 novel of the same name. The movie follows the story of Jack Torrance, a struggling writer and recovering alcoholic, who takes a job as the caretaker of the isolated Overlook Hotel during the off-season. Jack moves in with his wife Wendy and son Danny, who possesses a psychic ability known as “the shining,” which allows him to see visions of the hotel’s dark past and future.
The film was praised for its visual symbolism, haunting soundtrack, and Jack Nicholson’s iconic performance as the increasingly unhinged protagonist. However, it also received criticism for deviations from King’s novel and accusations of misogyny in its portrayal of Wendy Torrance.
Synopsis
The film opens with Jack being interviewed for the job of caretaker of the Overlook Hotel by Stuart Ullman, the hotel manager. Jack, who is recovering from alcoholism, is warned of the hotel’s history of violence and madness, but he dismisses it as irrelevant. Jack moves his family to the hotel, and as they settle in, Danny begins to experience supernatural visions and encounters the ghostly “grinning” twins.
Over time, Jack becomes increasingly isolated, agitated, and aggressive while working on his writing. Wendy discovers that Jack has been typing the same phrase repeatedly, seemingly losing his grip on reality. Meanwhile, Danny’s visions intensify, including a conversation with the ghost of the former hotel caretaker, who murdered his family before killing himself.
As winter storm batters the hotel, Jack finally snaps, and his descent into madness culminates in a violent confrontation with Wendy while Danny attempts to escape. Danny ultimately uses his “shining” ability to call for help and escape with Wendy, leaving Jack to freeze to death in the hotel’s hedge maze.
Reviews
The Shining received mixed reviews upon its initial release, with critics divided over the changes from the novel and Kubrick’s treatment of the material. However, it has since been hailed as a masterpiece of the horror genre, with praise for its direction, cinematography, and performances. It remains a beloved and influential film, with homages and references in countless other works of fiction and pop culture.
