What is Powerlifting?

Powerlifting is a strength sport that involves three main lifts: the squat, bench press, and deadlift. Athletes compete to lift the heaviest weight possible in each of these three lifts, with the total weight lifted determining the winner.

While similar to weightlifting, powerlifting differs in the specific lifts being competed in and the emphasis on maximal weight lifted rather than technique or speed.

The Three Lifts

The Squat: In the squat, the athlete must descend into a deep squat position and then stand back up while holding a loaded barbell on their back. The depth of the squat must be to at least parallel with the ground, and the bar must be lifted without any aid from the spotter or other equipment.

The Bench Press: In the bench press, the athlete lies on their back on a bench and lifts the loaded barbell from a starting position on the chest up to full arm extension. The bar must be lifted in a steady, controlled manner without bouncing off the chest.

The Deadlift: In the deadlift, the athlete lifts a loaded barbell from the ground to full extension of the hips, with the shoulders and knees locked out. The bar must be lifted in one smooth motion, without any jerking or dropping before reaching the top position.

The Rules of Powerlifting

In addition to specific rules for each of the three lifts, powerlifting has a number of general rules that athletes must follow in order to ensure fairness and safety:

• All lifting must be done in front of a panel of judges.
• Each athlete is allowed three attempts at each lift, and their highest successful lift in each category is added up for their total score.
• Athletes must wear a singlet and appropriate footwear during competition.
• Performance-enhancing drugs are strictly prohibited.
