Pearls Steven Universe
Pearls are a common gemstone within the world of “Steven Universe”. These gemstones serve as the attendants of the elite members of society, such as Diamonds, and are created as subservient beings. Pearls in Steven Universe are an interesting concept as they serve as a commentary on classism and lack of individuality.
Each Pearl is assigned to a specific Diamond as an attendant and is designed to match their Diamond’s color scheme. For instance, White Diamond’s Pearl is white, Blue Diamond’s Pearl is blue and so on. This means that Pearls are not allowed to choose their appearance and must conform to their Diamond’s desires, indicating a lack of autonomy and free will.
Pearls are also seen as lesser beings and are treated poorly by other gems, as shown in “A Single Pale Rose” when Pink Diamond’s Pearl is forced to hide her face with her own hands rather than expose her own face to the public.
Despite this, Pearls have their own personalities and desires, as shown through Pearl’s character development over the course of the show. Initially, Pearl serves as the typical obedient Pearl, following every order and desire of her owner, Rose Quartz. However, as the show progresses, Pearl begins to break free from her designated role and becomes her own person, developing a unique appearance and personality, such as when she learns to fight and becomes a member of the Crystal Gems.
Pearl’s journey in Steven Universe serves as a commentary on breaking free from societal norms and expectations, finding one’s own individuality, and rejecting toxic systems that strip individuals of their autonomy and agency. Pearls may have been created as servants, but they are so much more than that—being capable of their own desires, emotions, and identities.
Overall, Pearls in Steven Universe serve as a comment on classism, individuality, and autonomy, and Pearl’s character shows that it is possible to break free from these toxic systems and find one’s own sense of self.
