Olympic Games
The Summer Olympic Games, or “Jeux olympiques d’été” in French, are a big international multi-sport event that is also called the Games of the Olympiad and is often just called “the Olympics.” They happen every four years on leap years, except in 1900 and 2021. The first Games were held in 1896 in Athens, Greece. The most recent ones were held in Tokyo, Japan, in 2021. As the host city gets ready for the Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is in charge of organizing them. Medals have been given since 1904. In each Olympic event, first place gets a gold medal, second place gets a silver medal, and third place gets a bronze medal.
The Summer Olympics are the biggest and most important multisport event in the world. The Winter Olympics were made because of how well the Summer Olympics did.
In 1896, there were only 250 male competitors from 14 countries in the Summer Olympics, which had 42 events. In 2021, there were 339 events, with 11,420 competitors (almost half of whom were women) from 206 nations. Nineteen countries on five continents have hosted the Games. Four times in the US (1904, 1932, 1984, and 1996); three times in Great Britain (1908, 1948, and 2012); twice in Greece (1896 and 2004), France (1900 and 1924), Germany (1936 and 1972), Australia (1956 and 2000), and Japan (1964 and 2020); and once in Sweden (1912), Belgium (1920), the Netherlands (1928), Finland (1952), Italy (1960), Mexico (1968), Canada (1976), and the Soviet Union (1980).
London was the first city to hold the Summer Olympics three times. As of 2022, Paris, Los Angeles, Athens, and Tokyo had all held the Games twice. In 2024, Paris will host again, and in 2028, Los Angeles will do the same. Australian, French, British, Greek, and Swiss are the only countries that have ever competed in every Summer Olympics. Australia, France, and Great Britain have all won at least one prize at every Games. Great Britain is the only country that has won gold every time. The US has won the most medals at the Summer Olympics (18 times), more than any other country. The USSR came in second six times, followed by France, Great Britain, Germany, China, and the ex-Soviet “Unified Team” who each won once.
