The New Orleans Pelicans are a professional basketball team in the National Basketball Association (NBA) based in New Orleans, Louisiana. They were founded in 2002 as the Charlotte Hornets but moved to New Orleans in 2002 due to the city’s devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. In 2013, the team was renamed the New Orleans Pelicans.

The team is owned by Gayle Benson, the widow of former New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson. The Pelicans play their home games at the Smoothie King Center, which can accommodate over 18,000 fans. The team’s colors are navy blue, red, and gold.

The Pelicans’ mascot is Pierre the Pelican, who was introduced in 2013. Pierre has a unique look, as he was designed after undergoing reconstructive surgery following a basketball injury.

Team History

During the 2007-2008 NBA season, the Pelicans (then known as the Hornets) won their division title for the first time in franchise history. They also made it to the second round of the NBA playoffs that season, but were eliminated by the San Antonio Spurs.

One of the team’s standout players is Anthony Davis, who played for the Pelicans from 2012 to 2019. Davis was a six-time NBA All-Star and won the All-Star Game MVP award in both 2017 and 2018. He was also named to the All-NBA First Team three times during his tenure with the Pelicans.

Currently, the team is led by players such as Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram, and Lonzo Ball. Williamson was the first overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft and has quickly become a fan favorite due to his impressive play and athleticism.
