Team History
Before the Minnesota Wild came into existence, the NHL had been attempting to expand into the Midwest since the 1960s. Bill and Roger Masterton tried to bring the NHL to Minnesota in 1965, but the league rejected their proposal. In 1997, Walter Bush Jr., who had been involved in hockey with the United States Hockey team, led a successful effort to bring the NHL to Minnesota.
The team’s name, Minnesota Wild, was chosen to represent the state’s natural beauty and its passionate hockey fans. The team’s logo features a forest green and wheat-gold color scheme with a bear head prominently displayed; the colors were inspired by the state bird, the common loon.
Team Achievements
Since their establishment in 2000, the Minnesota Wild has made the playoffs nine times, including six straight playoff appearances from 2012-2017. The team’s best season was in 2002-03 when they won the Northwest Division title and made it to the Western Conference Finals before being eliminated by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.
The Minnesota Wild has produced several standout players, including Mikko Koivu, Zach Parise, and Ryan Suter. In 2015, Koivu became the first Finnish-born captain in NHL history, while Parise and Suter, who both signed with the team in 2012, brought depth and experience to the team’s roster.

The Minnesota Wild has a passionate and dedicated fan base that is known for its unique traditions and love of the sport. One of the team’s most popular traditions is the “Let’s Play Hockey!” chant, which is shouted at the start of every home game by a local celebrity or fan.
