The Madagascar Flag consists of two equal horizontal bands of red (top) and green with a vertical white band of the same width on the hoist side. The red stripe stands for sovereignty, independence, and patriotism whereas the green stripe symbolizes hope, prosperity and the country’s rich vegetation. The white color, being a symbol of purity, represents the Malagasy people’s wish for a peaceful and harmonious society.
The flag was adopted on October 14th, 1958, along with the Madagascar constitution which created the semi-autonomous republic in the French Community. Since then, the flag has undergone several changes. The current design was approved on June 27th, 1995, following a national referendum that signaled the end of a period of political instability, and the beginning of a new democratic era for Madagascar.
The Madagascar flag has its origin in the Merina Kingdom, one of the largest and most powerful kingdoms in Madagascar which was ruled between the 16th and 19th centuries. The flag of the Merina was red, green and white, which makes the current national flag a modified version of the original Merina flag.
Like every other national flag, certain rules apply to how the Madagascar flag should be treated or displayed. For instance, it should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously. The national flag should never be flown at half-mast except on occasions of national mourning and should not be used as a decoration in form of bunting or drapery. Furthermore, the flag should never be used to cover a speaker’s podium or be used as a tablecloth.
To sum up, the Madagascar flag is an important symbol of the country’s sovereignty and values. It has undergone several modifications, but the current design, which features red, green, and white colors, embody the Malagasy people’s aspirations for freedom, peace, hope, and prosperity.
