The Lithuania Flag is a national symbol of the Republic of Lithuania – a country located in Northern Europe, and one of the three Baltic States. The flag has been in use since March 20, 1989, and was officially re-adopted by the Lithuanian parliament in 2004.
History of the Lithuanian Flag
The Lithuanian Flag has a long and rich history. It bears the colors of the Lithuanian coat of arms, which date back to the 14th century, during the reign of Grand Duke Gediminas. The colors, yellow, green and red, are arranged in horizontal bands of equal width, with yellow on top, followed by green in the center, and red at the bottom. The colors are said to have symbolized the virtues of the citizens of Lithuania- sun, land, and blood, respectively.
The modern version of the Lithuanian Flag dates back to the interwar period, when Lithuania declared independence from Russia in 1918 after 123 years of domination. The flag was initially used only by Lithuanian government officials, but it gradually gained popularity among the general public. During Soviet occupation from 1940-1990, the use of the Lithuanian Flag was prohibited. However, by 1989, political changes in the Soviet Union allowed the Lithuanian flag to be displayed in public again.
Symbolism of the Lithuanian Flag
The Lithuanian Flag is more than just a combination of colors. It represents Lithuania’s history, its culture, and its people. The yellow color symbolizes the country’s bright future, the green represents Lithuania’s natural beauty, and the red is a symbol of the blood shed by Lithuanians in order to gain and maintain freedom and independence. The stripes represent equal rights and freedoms for all Lithuanian citizens, regardless of ethnicity or social background. Additionally, it is meant to represent Lithuania’s unity- as the colors of the flag bring together people from all corners of the country.
The Lithuanian Flag is a powerful symbol of Lithuanian history, culture, and national pride. As the country continues to move forward, the flag serves as a reminder of its past struggles and a symbol of hope for future success. The yellow, green, and red colors of the flag represent not only Lithuania’s virtues but also the shared values of all its citizens.
