The Libya flag is a tri-color flag consisting of three horizontal stripes colored, from top to bottom:
- Red
- Black
- Green
The flag was first used by the Libyan Arab Republic in 1977 and was later replaced by the Great Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya in 1979, which featured an insignia in the white stripe that was removed in 2011 following the fall of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime. The red represents the blood of martyrs who fought for Libya’s independence, the black represents the dark days of colonialism, and the green symbolizes Islam, Libya’s predominant religion, as well as the country’s fertility.
On February 17, 2011, during the Libyan Civil War, protesters in the eastern city of Benghazi raised the pre-1977 flag as a symbol of opposition to Gaddafi’s rule. Following the fall of the Gaddafi regime, the National Transitional Council reinstated the pre-1977 flag as the national flag of Libya on August 3, 2011.
The exact dimensions of the flag are not specified, but it should be a standard ratio of 1:2, which means that the width of the flag should be twice its length. However, some variations of the flag may have slightly different dimensions.
The Libya flag is a simple yet powerful symbol of the country’s struggle for independence and dedication to Islam. Its striking colors and design make it easily recognizable and iconic among other national flags.
