Kill Bill is a two-part movie series directed by Quentin Tarantino and released in 2003 and 2004 respectively. The story follows “The Bride,” a former assassin who survives a brutal attack on her wedding day orchestrated by her former boss, Bill. The Bride, who was pregnant at the time, wakes up from a four-year coma and vows to avenge herself on those who wronged her.

The Characters

The Bride, played by Uma Thurman, is the central character and the main badass. Her former code name was “Black Mamba,” a member of a group of highly-skilled assassins known as the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad. Her targets, also members of the group, include O-Ren Ishii, Vernita Green, Budd, and Elle Driver. Her ultimate goal is to kill Bill himself.

The Plot

The movie is divided into two parts; each part is a continuation of one another. The first part, “Volume 1,” focuses on The Bride’s quest for vengeance against O-Ren Ishii, the former leader of the Tokyo Yakuza, who orders the hit on The Bride. The second part, “Volume 2,” focuses on The Bride’s revenge against Bill and the remaining members of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad.

The story is told in a non-linear fashion, with scenes hopping back and forth between different parts of The Bride’s journey. Tarantino’s trademark use of violence, gore, and stylization is evident throughout the film. The movie is interspersed with flashbacks and anime-style animated segments. There are also nods to many old-school martial arts and exploitation movies, which Tarantino is known to be a fan of.

The Reception

Kill Bill was a commercial and critical success, grossing $333 million worldwide against a combined budget of $60 million. It was nominated for numerous awards, including four Golden Globe nominations and four Academy Award nominations. The movie’s soundtrack, composed by RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan, was also a hit.

Kill Bill is now recognized as a modern cult classic and a Tarantino masterpiece. Its legacy can be seen in the influence it has had on the action and martial arts genre and the countless homages and parodies it has since inspired.
