The flag of Jordan is a tribute to the country’s rich political and cultural history. The design of the Jordan Flag incorporates different symbolism, showcasing the values, heritage, and identity of the Jordanian people. The Jordan Flag has a striking combination of red, black, and white colors. It has a unique arc made of seven pointed white stars, and a black trapezoid.
Design and Symbolism
The Jordan Flag design comprises three horizontal strips in the following sequence – the upper and lower strips are of equal size and colored red, while the middle stripe is black, which is slightly wider. There is a white seven-pointed star on a crimson arc that is centered on the hoist side of the black strip. The arc and star represent the country’s Hashemite dynasty and symbolize the seven verses considering the name of Allah.
The black stripe on the flag is believed to symbolize the Abbasid Islamic Caliphate, which ruled across the Arab world. The two red stripes represent the Arab Revolt of 1916-1918 and the Hashemite Emirate, while the white stars of the arc represent the seven hills of Amman, the capital city of Jordan.
History of the Jordan Flag
The Jordan Flag was officially adopted on April 16th, 1928, during the Hashemite Emirate under British administration. The original design included only a black, green, and white stripe. However, the National Defence Party proposed a new flag that featured the seven-pointed star on the hoist. The current design was officially adopted in 1952 following multiple versions.
The Jordan Flag is a symbolic representation of the rich heritage and cultural diversity of the Jordanian people. The color combination and design of the flag communicate the traditions, values, and history of both the country and the Hashemite monarchy. Today, the flag of Jordan stands as a powerful symbol of national identity and pride.
