The flag of Iraq consists of three horizontal stripes, two outer stripes, one red and one black, and a middle white stripe with a green Arabic inscription in the center. The inscription reads “Allahu Akbar” which translates to “God is the Greatest” in English. The phrase is written in the Kufic script which is a calligraphic style that originated in Kufa, Iraq, during the 7th century.

The current flag has been in use since 2008, but its design has changed frequently throughout history. The first national flag of Iraq was adopted in 1921 after gaining independence from the Ottoman Empire. It consisted of three equal horizontal stripes of red, white, and black with a green five-pointed star in the middle. The colors were inspired by the flags of the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire. The green star represented Islam.

In 1958, a military coup d’état overthrew the monarchy and established a republic, and the flag was changed to reflect this change in government. The green star was removed, and the white stripe was widened to take its place. In 1963, the Ba’ath Party took over the government and changed the flag to include the Arabic phrase “Unity, Freedom, Socialism” in green script on the white stripe. In 1991, after the Gulf War, the flag was changed once again to remove the Ba’ath Party writing and add the words “Allahu Akbar” in Saddam Hussein’s handwriting.

After Hussein’s overthrow in 2003 and the establishment of a new government, the flag was changed once again. In 2004, the “Allahu Akbar” writing was retained, but the handwriting was changed, and the stars were added to the white stripe. This design was used until 2008 when the stars were removed, and the size of the writing was increased.

The Iraq Flag is a symbol of the nation’s history, culture, and religion. The colors and design represent the country’s struggle for independence, its political ideologies, and its Islamic heritage. The current design with “Allahu Akbar” in green Kufic script on a white stripe with red and black outer stripes is widely recognized and respected throughout the world.
