A hippopotamus, also known as a hippo, is a semi-aquatic mammal that is native to sub-Saharan Africa. The name comes from the Greek words “hippos” meaning horse and “potamos” meaning river. It is the third-largest land animal after elephants and white rhinos, weighing up to 3,500 kg (7,700 lb) and measuring up to 1.5 meters (5 ft) tall at the shoulder.

Hippos are known for their large, barrel-shaped bodies, short legs, and big mouths that reveal their large tusks. They are mostly gray or brown and have a hairless skin that secretes a pinkish oil that helps protect their skin from sunburn and water damage. They are also known to be aggressive and territorial, and are considered to be one of the most dangerous animals in Africa.

Hippos are herbivores and typically graze on grass at night. They can consume up to 50 kg (110 lb) of vegetation per day. They are also excellent swimmers and can hold their breath for up to five minutes. They use their webbed feet to navigate through water and their eyes, ears, and nostrils are located on the top of their heads, allowing them to stay mostly submerged while still being able to see, hear, and smell what’s happening around them.

Hippos live in groups of up to 30 individuals, led by a dominant male. Females typically give birth to one calf every two years, which they raise for up to eight years. Hippos communicate with each other through grunts, snorts, and barks, and are known to mark their territories with their dung and urine.

Hippos are often hunted for their meat and ivory tusks, which are highly valued in some cultures. They are also threatened by habitat loss due to human encroachment and water pollution. Conservation efforts are being made to protect them, including the creation of protected areas and the implementation of laws against hunting and poaching.
