Fiji Flag PNG Images Transparent Background
The Fiji flag is the national flag of the island nation of Fiji. It features three vertical bands of colour; left side is light blue, the centre is white, and the right side is light blue. The coat of arms of Fiji is located on the right-hand side of the flag, containing a shield with a cross of Saint George, topped with a golden lion, spread eagle and supported by two Fijian warriors. Below the shield is a ribbon, which contains Fiji’s motto ‘Fear God and Honour The Queen’.
Symbolism
The light blue colour of the Fiji Flag represents both the Pacific Ocean and the nation’s sky, while the white centre symbolizes purity, democracy, and unity. The shield of the coat of arms represents Fiji’s historical and cultural background, where the cross of Saint George symbolizes the British colonial rule over Fiji before gaining independence, upheld by the lion located at the top. The spread eagle is perched over a coconut palm, and the cacao pod, which represent Fiji’s wealth in marine and forest resources. Fiji warriors are also depicted, with one holding a spear and another who has a wood carving.
History
The current flag was adopted on 10 October 1970, when the country gained independence from the United Kingdom. It was designed by Tessa Mackenzie, a New Zealand-born artist who was living in Fiji. The previous flag featured the Union Jack in the left-hand upper corner, with the shield of the country’s coat of arms in the centre.
The Fiji flag underwent a minor modification in 2013, where the size of Fiji’s coat of arms was increased to improve visibility and promote national identity. The redesign was done by a committee of national parliamentarians.
The Fiji flag is one of the distinct national flags globally, with symbolic and cultural significance. The flag represents the country’s historical background and promotes national identity. Although minor modification was made in the past, the flag continues to be a representation of the island nation’s uniqueness and strength.
