The Ethiopia national flag is one of the most recognizable flags in the world. The flag has consists of three horizontal stripes of equal size, with the top and bottom stripes being green and the middle stripe being yellow. In the center of the yellow stripe is a national emblem – a blue seven-pointed star within a wreath encircled by a blue band. The green stripes represent the country’s natural beauty and fertility, while the yellow stripe symbolizes religious tolerance, unity, and hope. The present-day Ethiopian national flag was first adopted in 1996, after the fall of the Marxist-Leninist regime that had been in power for decades. The current flag was designed to symbolize unity, peace, and democracy, after years of political turmoil and conflict.
Before the present-day flag design, Ethiopia had several other national flags. For almost 15 years, Ethiopia used a flag that consisted of a tricolor of green, yellow, and red band from top to bottom imposed over a lion of Judah with an imperial crown. This flag featured on during the reign of Ethiopia’s last emperor, Haile Selassie.
