The Equatorial Guinea flag was adopted on October 12, 1968, when the country gained its independence from Spain. It was designed by a local artist, Atanasio Ndongo Miyone, who won a competition to create the flag.

The Equatorial Guinea flag has undergone a few changes over the years. In 1972, the six stars above the shield were changed from the original five stars to represent the addition of the province of Annobon. In 1979, the coat of arms was added to the flag.
