Behavior
Elephants are incredibly social creatures and live in family units, led by a female matriarch. These family units can consist of up to 100 individuals, and the bond between the members is incredibly strong.
They are also known for their intelligence, with studies showing that they have self-awareness, empathy, and a long-term memory that can last for decades. Elephants communicate through a range of sounds, body language and pheromones, which have different meanings based on the situation.
Conservation Status
Elephants are currently listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, with habitat loss and poaching being the two biggest threats to their survival.
Poaching is a particularly significant threat, with elephants being hunted for their ivory tusks. Despite laws banning ivory trade, the demand for it still exists in some parts of the world, leading to the poaching of thousands of elephants every year.
