Chinese New Year, also known as Spring Festival, is the most important traditional festival celebrated in China. It is based on the Chinese lunar calendar and falls on a different date each year, sometime between late January and mid-February.
The festival lasts for 15 days and is a time for family reunions, feasting, gift-giving, and cleaning the house to sweep away bad luck. Each year is associated with one of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac, and people born in the year of that animal are believed to possess its characteristics.
The Chinese New Year celebrations begin on the eve of the festival, known as New Year’s Eve. It is customary for families to gather for a reunion dinner and exchange red envelopes filled with money. Red is considered a lucky color in Chinese culture, and the red envelopes are meant to bring good fortune and blessings.
The first day of the Chinese New Year is marked by the lighting of firecrackers to scare away evil spirits, the wearing of new clothes, and the offering of food to the gods. On the second day, married daughters return to their parents’ home for a family meal, known as “going back to the door.”
Other activities during the festival include lion and dragon dances, temple fairs, and the Lantern Festival on the fifteenth day. The Lantern Festival features beautiful lantern displays, riddles written on lanterns, and the release of sky lanterns into the night sky.
Chinese New Year is celebrated not only in China but also in other parts of the world with large Chinese populations, such as Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, and Vietnam. It is a time for cultural exchange, as people of different nationalities come together to enjoy the festive atmosphere and learn about Chinese traditions.
Chinese New Year is a colorful and joyous occasion that celebrates the beginning of a new lunar year and encourages people to spend time with their loved ones, reflect on the past, and look forward to the future.
