A Béquille is a French word that translates to “kickstand” in English. It is a device that attaches to a bicycle and is used to stabilize the bike when it is parked or stationary. A kickstand is typically made of metal and is attached to the frame of the bicycle near the bottom bracket or rear axle.
When a bicycle is parked using a Béquille, the kickstand extends down and props the bike up at an angle. This allows the rider to easily rest the bike without leaning it against a wall, fence or tree. Kickstands are often popular with commuters and urban cyclists who frequently stop and start at traffic lights, intersections, and other places.
However, not all bicycles come with a Béquille. In fact, some high-performance bicycles do not have a kickstand as it adds additional weight and can affect the bike’s aerodynamics. Cyclists who prefer to use a kickstand will need to purchase one separately and install it on their own.
There are different types of kickstands available on the market, including single-leg kickstands, double-leg kickstands, and center-mounted kickstands. Single-leg kickstands attach to the chainstays of the bike frame and are the most common type of kickstand. Double-leg kickstands provide greater stability and are often found on cargo bikes and touring bikes. Center-mounted kickstands attach to the bike frame near the bottom bracket and provide a stable base for the bike.
Ultimately, whether or not to use a Béquille is a personal preference. It can make it easier to park and rest your bike, but it may not be preferred on high-performance or high-speed bicycles.
